High-pressure with neutrons at the MLZ

The aim of the project is to develop and optimize the high-pressure sample environment on four different instruments at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Center (MLZ) in Garching: MIRA, DNS, POLI, and HEiDi. The project strengthens the collaboration between two university groups (RWTH Aachen University and the Technical University of Munich) and the Jülich Center for Neutron Science at the MLZ. The technical goals include

(1) the implementation of multi-parametric studies under high pressure and in a magnetic field as a function of temperature using a position-sensitive detector (PSD) on POLI and HEiDi,

(2) the development of suitable software for the data analysis of PSD data with special consideration of effects that can be attributed to the high-pressure sample environment ("diamond dips")

(3) the development and manufacturing of transmission diamond-anvil cells and so-called "opposed-anvil" cells for POLI, HEiDi and MIRA, as well as the

(4) development, production and optimization of clamp cells for POLI, MIRA, and DNS.

Our goal is to examine one and the same sample, ideally in the same cell, with the various experimental methods available on the four instruments. This approach offers the advantage that the high-pressure sample environment can be shared between the complementary measuring stations at the MLZ. The successful implementation of high-pressure technology serves to attract a new, broad and multidisciplinary user community and increases the international competitiveness of the MLZ in an international comparison. The availability of a sample environment for studies with simultaneous variation of pressure, temperature and magnetic field enables the processing of new, scientific questions such as e. g. pressure-induced quantum phenomena or multiparametric studies on functional materials.
