Upgrade of the hot single-crystal diffractometer HEIDI for experiments on small samples (< 1 mm³) and with pressure cells

The project focuses on the upgrade of the single crystal diffractometer HEIDI at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) and enables measurements on small samples with a volume below 1 mm³ with neutrons of short wavelengths. For this the neutron flux below 1 Å as well as and the signal to noise ratio has been optimized by a new Cu-220 monochromator and various new optical components (solid state collimators, neutron guides).

These improvements of HEIDI allow studies on single crystals under high pressures in diamond anvil cells. Various suitable high pressure cells of different types (panoramic, transmission) have been developed and adapted to the experimental conditions at HEIDI. In addition, the sample environment of HEiDi has been extended to allow high pressure experiments at low temperatures down to 3 K.

In sum, HEiDi has been enabled to make additional important contributions to the various topics in recent scientific topics related to energy and data storage materials.
