The article "Beam-induced redox chemistry in iron oxide nanoparticle dispersions at ESRF-EBS" by PhD student Sabrina Thomä and Professor Mirijam Zobel from the Institute of Crystallography is online since Jan. 13, 2023. It will appear in Volume 30, Part 2 of the Journal for Synchrotron Radiation in March 2023.

Sabrina had detected X-ray beam-induced changes in the time-dependent diffraction patterns of her nanoparticle dispersions at the ESRF's new "extremely brilliant" source. By comparison with data before the upgrade, she was able to attribute this change, which is due to a reduction in iron oxide nanoparticles, to the now exceptionally high photon flux. Thus, at the fourth generation of synchrotron storage rings, inorganic materials are also affected by radiation damage. The new brilliance thus not only enables experiments with a time resolution unimaginable until a few years ago, but also requires scientists to critically scrutinize changes in in situ experiments for possible radiation-induced aspects.
